The older brother · Lens: self-deception and denial · Lament and Honesty

“And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends.”

Luke 15:29 (KJV)

Walk with me through this one... The younger son has come home, and there is music and dancing. The older brother hears it from the field and refuses to go in. When his father comes out to him, all the years of silent resentment spill out: all these years I have served you. I never disobeyed. And you never gave me even a young goat to celebrate with my friends.

There is real pain in those words. It is worth pausing on it. He has been faithful, dutiful, and quietly unhappy for a long time. And he did not know it until this moment, when it all came pouring out.

Self-deception often works like that. We tell ourselves we are fine, content, obedient. We believe it, too. Denial is one of the mind's ways of protecting us from feelings we are not ready to face. Then something happens, and the truth rushes up from underneath.

Sometimes the one who never left is the one who is farthest away.

The older brother believed he was the good son, the faithful one. He may not have realized how much bitterness he carried, or how little joy he felt in his father's house. He had been close in body and distant in heart.

The father's answer is gentle: son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. He does not shame the older son for his outburst. He invites him in.

The story ends without telling us whether the older son went in. That silence feels honest. Sometimes the hardest step is admitting how long we have been standing outside.

If honest words spill out of you that you did not know were there, the Father is not offended by them; he comes out to meet you where you are standing.

Walk with this today

What feelings might you have been telling yourself you don't have?

Prayer

Father, I have told myself I am fine for a long time. Bring the truth up gently, and come out to meet me in it. Help me hear that everything you have is mine, and help me come in.
